Greek Food and More From a Local Restaurant

This afternoon after running some errands, my sister and I decided to take in a local restaurant that offers up some classic Greek eats. "Son of a Greek" has been open here in McDonough, just about 35 miles south of Atlanta for a while, yet I have never taken the time to visit. I absolutely love a good Gyro and given the name, thought that this would be the time to give it a shot.

We arrived early and were the only guests in the establishment for a short amount of time before others began trickling in. We were greeted with friendly service and told to have a seat wherever we would like. We opted to sit inside, however, they do offer a large outdoor patio area if you choose to eat outside. The decor was modest with several booths and tables to accomodate larger parties and the walls were tastefully decorated with various paintings of food. I noticed that, while it does have a bar for guests, their alcohol selection consists of wine and beer.

The food did not disappoint. My sister selected a grilled chicken Greek salad and I opted for a Gyro plate. Both items were featured on the lunch menu. When I ordered my lunch portion Gyro plate, I was informed that it came with no side options. I then opted to order the same thing from the dinner menu to be able to get an additional side. I chose the Greek potatoes which are baked and tossed in olive oil, herbs, lemon juice and then topped with house Greek dressing. They were terrific. I do wish that I would have been informed at the time of ordering that had I opted for the Gyro wrap plate, it would have included a side for no additional cost. For an appetizer we picked the Spanakopita, it was truly delicious! Flakey and buttery with onions, spinach and Feta cheese. A terrific starter for our Greek feast.

When it came time for our entrees, they were delivered and the portion sizes were huge! The Greek salad was piled high with generous toppings of tomatoes, feta, onions, and beautiful Kalamata olives. My Gyro plate was evenly divided into three parts with shredded lettuce, wonderful Tzatziki, sliced onions and seasoned gyro meat. We were checked on periodically and drinks were kept full. The experience was good and the food was tasty and filling.

The menu has a wide variety of food other than the Greek choices, including, pastas, pizza, subs, even burgers and bar foods. Worth stopping by and giving it a try. Prices are fairly inexpensive ranging from $4.50-12.95, so not at all a five star elegant restaurant, but a simple casual dining spot, that even features a small arcade for the young and young at heart.
