Italian Turkey Burgers

For a healthier take on the meatball sub or traditional cheeseburger, I threw together an Italian turkey burger.  So good and reminds me a lot of my Cincinnati favorite Steak Hoagie with Pizza sauce and cheese.   I served it up with some skin on potato wedges and it's like having a guilty treat without all the guilt.

ITALIAN TURKEY BURGERS

- 1 pound Italian seasoned 91/9 ground turkey
- 1 teaspoon dried Basil
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup milk
- 2 slices of 100% Whole Wheat bread
- 2 Egg whites
- 1/2 cup of Pizza/Marinara sauce
- 4 Slices of reduced fat Provolone cheese

Preheat oven to 400*F
In a medium bowl, place the 2 slices of bread and cover with 1/4 cup of milk and allow to completely absorb. Once absorbed squeeze and drain any excess.  Tear the soaked bread into pieces and return to bowl.  Mix together the ground turkey, spices and egg whites until blended throughout.
Patty out the meat mixture in to 4 patties.  On a foil lined or non-stick baking pan place the burgers and bake at 400 for 30 minutes.  During the last 10 minutes of baking, spoon equal amounts of the pizza/marinara sauce over each burger.  In the last 4-5 minutes of baking place the Provolone cheese on each patty and allow to melt.  Remove from oven and allow to rest for 5 minutes to allow any juices to redistribute.  Serve on your favorite burger bun or roll.  For a carbohydrate friendlier version, omit the bun and eat with a fork.

I love this burger.  You can also form them into smaller patties and make sliders.  Give them a try and enjoy!
