As we all know, I am a lover of any and all things deep fried. Team that up with a double decker sandwich with ham, turkey and cheese that has been battered and deep fried. I am literally doing back flips. Or, at least trying to do back flips because of the most recent onslaught of fat and calories. I wanted to come up with a way to make my guilty pleasure, and, at the very least shave a few calories off of it.
The original Monte Cristo sandwich comes in anywhere from 673-1286 calories. For some people that is their entire or half of their entire calorie intake for the day. I managed to make this masterpiece sandwich equally as delicious without the deep frying and without the batter while keeping its crispiness and ooey gooey textures.
Here's what I did:
Using a medium to large store/bakery bought butter croissant, top it with extra lean deli meat turkey and ham (about 2-3 ounces),1 slice of american cheese, 1 slice of Swiss cheese. I cut the cheese slices in half to help with the layering proocess. Using a light margarine butter spread (only about 1teaspoon to 1 1/2 teaspoons) spread it onto the top half of the croissant and the bottom so that when grilling it will brown evenly. Layer meats and cheeses starting with cheese and ending with cheese. Close your sandwich and place it on a Panini press or a George Forman grill and press. You can also prep this as a grilled cheese in a pan just apply pressure to flatten out as with the grill or press. Once golden brown and crisp on the outside remove to a plate and serve with a very light dusting of powdered sugar (less than a teaspoon) and 2oz. of blackberry or raspberry jam.
Unbelievabdly my recipe comes in at just 493-498 calories. This saves anywhere from 180-793 calories. Still tasty and delicious. You can't beat that with a stick!
