Just in time for Valentine's Day! A sandwich that has it's very own Valentine. Croque Madame & Croque Monsieur!
Since the first time I tried the wonderful french ham and cheese sandwich Croque Monsieur, I have wanted to give its counter part Croque Madame a try. While watching Food Network this afternoon, I saw that Melissa D'Arabian (Ten Dollar Dinners) was preparing a Quick Croque Madame. At first, I was taken aback in that how on earth could one possibly prepare a recipe that calls for the lovely Gruyere cheese for ten dollars or less? I decided to give Melissa's recipe a try. She replaced the Gruyere with a regular Swiss and added a couple of tablespoons of white wine in order to give the less expensive cheese more depth of flavor. She also created a make shift Bechamel sauce by combining sour cream, dijon mustard and granulated garlic. I am not going to sit hear and preach that this was the best sandwich ever. However, I will say, that as a low budget and fast alternative to the original this was tasty and filling and I will absolutely be repeating the meal.
I served this french treat with a batch of homemade potato chips, topped with garlic salt and paprika to enhance the flavor of garlic in the sour cream sauce. The meal was easy and is something that I would most certainly serve for company. Tipping my hat to Melissa D'Arabian. Thanks for a quick yet elegant dish!

Bon Appetit!
